An online repository for my thoughts on...anything.

Hello everyone, I recently installed the trial version of KeepSafe and set the program to backup for me, any .PSD files I work on. I'm a graphic designer, I'm retentive about backups, and this program would be a huge time saver for me,...if only it worked. So far, no matter how I set the options, I cannot get this program to backup any .PSD files I work on. I'm not sure if my situation is limited to just .PSD either, it's the only file type I've attempted. My installation may be having issues backing up anything. I've attempted to use both global, and custom, settings for .PSD, I've unchecked all the file restrictions (size, number of revisions, application exclusions, et al.) and it still won’t back up my .PSD files. I've attempted removing the .PSD entry in the program and recreating it, no results there either. I've tried telling KeepSafe to save files onto a mobile HD I have connected to my system, and when I saw it wasn't working, I thought that might be the problem. So, I switched the settings and told KeepSafe to save files to a folder on my C:\ drive, didn't make a difference. Anyone have any advice? (I'm going to work with some other file types, and update this with my results...) Thanks, in advance. Melchiah

Update:

I've attempted telling KeepSafe to backup .DOC files, using the same settings I used for .PSD, and the default settings as well, KeepSafe isn't backing up those files for me either...

Where is the PSD you are saving?

The trial will only make backups of files if they are in the My Documents Directory.

LOL, I feel so stupid. Thanks Neil, that solves that problem.

My files are never located in that folder, since I don't trust Windows. However, now that I've found this nifty little utility, maybe I'll feel more comfortable about storing things under the \Documents and Settings\ folders.

Thanks again.

Looking for trial restrictions on the product pages at stardock.com (https://www.stardock.com/products/KeepSafe/infoguide.asp) : Found this:
Pricing & Availability
KeepSafe standalone will be released in April 2006, but is currently available in beta as part of ThinkDesk subscriptions. When available, KeepSafe standalone will be $29.95.

I couldn't find anywhere on the site with trial restrictions. Are tehy displayed as part of the install?

Well, I didn't notice any restriction notices during the install, but when working with the options, I attempted to add a directory to monitor and the program told me I could not do that, since I'm using the trial version.

I misunderstood though. I thought since I could add extensions to backup, it didn't matter what folder they lived in; the program would detect the change and backup my file. After thinking about it though, it makes sense that in addition to knowing what file types I want backed up, the program would also need to know where my source files live on my HD; else the program would have to constantly monitor the entire HD for a change in every file type I have it monitoring. I'd throw this program out the nearest window if that was the case, considering how taxing that'd be on the system.

I'll work with it for a few days and see how it goes...

In the full version of Keepsafe it will backup EVERY file type in the included directories AND EVERY file with specified extensions no matter where they are saved on the disk.  This means you can either say I want all .docs saved, or I want every file in c:\neil stored, or both etc etc.

In the trial it will only backup files in the My Documents directory.  I do wonder if we need to make this restriction more obvious to avoid confusion.

So your initial thinking was right.  But its not overly taxing thanks to how we designed the software.

You're probably right there, Neil.  I certainly was unaware there were functional limitations on the trial...and would have wandered up a garden path somewhere looking for a solution to his problem...

I think others may just have posted here for the same error, too.

Melchiah ....the full version works perfectly...no matter where the files are...and I do not see any performance hit of any kind at all....

Yeah, stardock is notorious for not providing easy to find descriptions, sys req, change logs, manuals, etc.... Its one of those thigns that keeps me from buying the programs (amongst a few other problems)... They seem to have nifty toys (windowblinds, IP, etc...) and a some coold ideas (multiplicty) but execution and support is very questionable...
